And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven (Luke 21:11).
Revelation 11:13 mentions a great earthquake that will occur during the end times that will kill 7,000 people. There also needs to be more than one earthquake in this time period, and they need to occur in various places. The following chart and map were compiled using data that originated with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for earthquakes that caused at least 7,000 deaths.
The turn of the 20th century marked a significant increase in the number of deaths caused by great earthquakes, thus sharply increasing the sorrow and pain inflicted. About 1.3 million people died from great earthquakes in the 1900s. That trend has continued into the 21st century with almost 800,000 deaths in just the first 16 years of this century.
When Jesus said that there would be earthquakes in “divers” places, He meant “various” places. This map shows where earthquakes that killed over 7,000 people since 1900 have occurred and is evidence of what Jesus said. Yellow markers indicate earthquakes between 1900 and 1914 and red markers indicate earthquakes after the start of WWI.
