What Is the 70th Week of Years for Israel?

IsraelThe 70th week of years for Israel is a 7 year period of time with one year for each day of the week. It comes from a prophecy of 70 weeks of years in Daniel 9:24-27. Followers of Jesus Christ will also be impacted since we have been grafted into the root of the olive tree that represents God (Romans 11:16-24).

The Prophecy of 70 Weeks

“Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” (Daniel 9:24–27)

The precedent for interpreting weeks as years comes from Genesis 29:16–28 where we find Jacob in love with Rachel.  Jacob was willing to serve Rachel’s father, Laban, for 7 years in order to take Rachel as his wife.  Jacob does that, but as is the custom of the day, he is given Laban’s oldest daughter, Leah, first.  Laban says that if Jacob is willing to fulfill her “week” by serving Laban another “7 years“, then he can have Rachel as his wife also.  This passage equates 1 week with 7 years.

The prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27 is for 70 weeks which would be 490 years and would be fulfilled in 2 periods over a very long span of time. Since this prophecy was given to the Jewish people, it will be fulfilled on Jewish time which is based on the Jewish calendar of 30 days per month.

The First 69 Weeks of Years Fulfilled

The first 69 weeks of years, or 483 years, has already occurred. Based on Daniel 9:25-26 the starting point was when King Artaxerxes issued a decree allowing Nehemiah and the Jewish people to go back to Jerusalem to rebuild it.  This is recorded in Nehemiah 2:1-6.  The ending point is when Jesus rode into Jerusalem as King on Palm Sunday.  This is recorded in Luke 19:28-44 in fulfillment of the prophecy given in Zechariah 9:9.

Sir Robert Anderson, who was the Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department at Scotland Yard, and a theologian, thoroughly researched this subject, and concluded that exactly 483 years transpired between these two events! In chapter 10 of his book, “The Coming Prince” (1895), he writes: “The Julian date of that 10th Nisan was Sunday the 6th April, A.D. 32. What then was the length of the period intervening between the issuing of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem and the public advent of ‘Messiah the Prince,’ — between the 14th March, B.C. 445, and the 6th April, A.D. 32? THE INTERVAL CONTAINED EXACTLY AND TO THE VERY DAY 173,880 DAYS, OR SEVEN TIMES SIXTY-NINE PROPHETIC YEARS OF 360 DAYS, the first sixty-nine weeks of Gabriel’s prophecy.”

A Gap in Time

According to Daniel 9:26, after the 69 weeks of years are completed Jesus is crucified. There is a gap between the end of the 69 weeks of years and the beginning of the last or 70th week of years. We are currently living in this gap.

Hope in Difficult Times

The Scriptures provide at least three different avenues for people to interact with the things that shall come to pass after the 70th week of years starts. The first is to pray to escape them (Luke 21:36). The second is to seek the Lord to be hid or concealed from them (Zephaniah 2:1-3). And the third is to be kept or taken care of through them (Revelation 3:10, John 17:15, Matthew 24:13). All three offer hope.

The Beginning of the 70th Week of Years

The 70th week of years begins when Antichrist confirms the covenant with many for one week or 7 years (Daniel 9:27).

The First Half of the 70th Week of Years

The first three and one half years of the 70th week of years are commonly referred to as “The Tribulation”. However, there are many signs that will occur simultaneously throughout the first half of the 70th week of years.

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come (Matthew 24:9–14, Luke 21:12–19)

After signing a covenant with many, Antichrist is also on the rise during this time.

Affliction or Tribulation

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake (Matthew 24:9).

One of the signs during the first half of the 70th week of years is affliction. The word translated afflicted is the Greek word thlipsis, that can also mean tribulation, pressure, oppression, or distress. Since the first half of the 70th week of years is commonly referred to as “The Tribulation”, we will use the word tribulation instead of afflicted. While we tend to think of tribulation as a bad thing, the following passages indicate the positive influence it can have on our lives.

  • …and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. (Acts 14:21:22)
  • And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; … (Romans 5:3-5)
  • Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation,… (Romans 8:35)
  • …For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; … (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)
  • …I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) … (Revelation 2:8-11)

Hated By All Men for Jesus’ Name Sake

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved (Mark 13:13). Jesus said the world would hate His followers because the world first hated Him (John 15:18-25).

The word translated “hated” is the Greek word miseo which can also mean detest. God’s perspective is:

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you [from their company], and shall reproach [you], and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward [is] great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets (Luke 6:22-23).

False Prophets Arise and Deceive Many

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many (Matthew 24:11).

The words “false prophet” are actually one word in the Greek text. That word, pseudoprophetes, means “one who, acting the part of a divinely inspired prophet, utters falsehoods under the name of divine prophecies”. The word translated deceive can also mean “to lead away from the truth, to lead into error”. The person being described is one who would claim to be divinely inspired, and yet lead people from the truth into error.

The apostle John tells us to” try the spirits” (1 John 4:1). The word translated “try” means “to test, examine, prove, scrutinize (to see whether a thing is genuine or not), as metals”. The best way to do this is to compare what is being taught against the Bible which is the ultimate final authority.

Iniquity Shall Abound

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold (Matthew 24:12).

The word that is translated iniquity is the Greek word anomia which can also be translated wickedness. And, the word translated abounds is the Greek word plethuno which means to increase or multiply. The same Greek word translated iniquity is also used to describe the religious leaders in Jesus’ day (Matthew 23:28) and the mystery of iniquity when Antichrist will be revealed (2Thessalonians 2:7).

When Jesus Christ returns He will send His angels to gather those who do iniquity (Matthew 13:41-42); and when speaking of the judgment day, Jesus mentions some who prophesied in His name, and refers to them as workers of iniquity (Matthew 7:21-23).

In Matthew 24:11 Jesus mentions false prophets that will also arise. It is quite possible, then, that these false prophets are at least some of the false prophets referred to in Matthew 7:21-23. Since Jesus referred to them as workers of iniquity, it may be at least partially through them that iniquity abounds as mentioned in the next verse, Matthew 24:12. One of the results of their work is that many will be deceived. As a result of the iniquity the love of many will grow cold, and some may even fall away from the faith as is indicated will happen during this time.

Love of Many Shall Grow Cold

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold (Matthew 24:12).

The same Greek word, agape, is used to describe God’s love for the world (John 3:16) and speaks of God’s unconditional love in giving Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for all humanity’s sins so that whoever believes in Jesus Christ would not perish in the lake of fire, but have eternal life.

Jesus also told His disciple to agape one another (John 13:34-35), and the Apostle Paul mentioned agape as the first fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). The Apostle John put it this way:

He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. (1 John 2:10-11)

If the love of many followers of Jesus Christ grows cold, it means that they are no longer obeying His commandment and abiding in the light. Since love endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:7), if love grows cold, it will be harder to endure to the end. Agape love is one of the ingredients that will help us endure all things, including the difficult times that are coming. If agape love waxes cold during this period, it is not surprising that believers will find it more difficult to endure, thus leading to more people falling away as Jesus and Paul indicated.

Many Will Be Offended

And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another (Matthew 24:10).

The word translated offended is the Greek word skandalizo, from which we get the English word scandalize. The word means to put a stumbling block in someone’s path so they will fall; or to entice someone to sin, or fall away. It could also mean to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey.

The Scriptures also state that one could be offended as a result of tribulation or persecution (Matthew. 13:20-21). During the first half of the 70th week of years, Jesus said that many would be offended. He also said that it would be a time of tribulation and persecution. So, it is possible that many would be offended due to the tribulation and persecution.

The night Jesus was betrayed, He told His disciples that they would be offended because of Him (Matt. 26:31).

Note that Jesus did not cause the offense, but because of the circumstances surrounding His arrest, the disciples forsook Jesus and fled. This could be the scenario that occurs during the first half of the 70th week of years, which could even possibly lead to some falling away from the faith.

Finally, Jesus had this to say about those who would offend:

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. (Matthew 18:6)

Antichrist Gains Strength

And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people. He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time (Daniel 11:23-24).

And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate (Daniel 9:27).

The Hebrew words translated league and covenant are very similar in meaning according to Gesenius’s Lexicon. The word league means to “join in fellowship”. So during the first half of the 70th week of years Antichrist will gain strength.

The Middle of the 70th Week of Years

Several significant milestones occur around the middle of the 70th week of years.

The Externalization of the Hierarchy

What Satan Knows Will Happen

The Bible tells us what will happen in the end times. Satan knows the Bible. He is making his plans based on what he knows from Scripture that he will be able to do. One of the things he knows is that he and his demons will be cast out of Heaven and into the earth in the middle of the 70th week of years (Revelation 12:7-9).

At that point, Satan knows that he only has a short time of 3.5 years to accomplish his work (Revelation 12:12). He empowers Antichrist for 42 months (Revelation 13:2) and seeks to establish a one world government (Revelation 13:7) and a one world religion that worships him and Antichrist (Revelation 13:3-4).  He also leads a rebellion against Israel and those who follow Jesus Christ (Revelation 13:7) that will culminate at the Battle of Armageddon.

Satan Deceives People to Believe That Antichrist is Jesus Christ

Between 1919 and 1949 Alice Bailey received teaching from the Ascended Master Djwhal Khul. He described how a Hierarchy of Ascended Masters would eventually reveal themselves and establish a new order, unifying all faiths into a one world religion. Alice Bailey recorded this plan in several books, the primary one being “The Externalisation of the Hierarchy” which has become a cornerstone for the New Age Movement seeking to fulfill these plans. Consider just a few quotes from the New Age Movement:

There are at the present time three great activities going on: First, the activity to be felt in the “center where the will of God is known,” that will-to-good which has carried all creation on toward a greater glory and a steadily deepening, intelligent responsiveness; this today is creatively endeavoring to bring in the new world order, the order of the Kingdom of God under the physical supervision of the Christ. This might be regarded as the externalization of the spiritual Hierarchy of our planet. – The Externalization of the Hierarchy

Part of the immediate Plan includes the simultaneous externalization of the Hierarchy, reappearance of the Christ, and restoration of the mysteries of initiation to Humanity. –  The Reappearance of the Christ 71

“… the church movement, like all else, is but a temporary expedient and serves but as a transient resting place for the evolving life. Eventually, there will appear the Church Universal, and its definite outlines will appear towards the close of this century (20th). In this connection, forget not the wise prophecy of H.P.B. as touching events at the close of this century. This Church will be nurtured into activity by the Christ and His disciples when the outpouring of the Christ principle, the true second Coming, has been accomplished. No date for the advent do I set, but the time will not be long.” – Externalisation of the Hierarchy

Satan’s strategy appears to be to make his fall from Heaven to earth look like the second coming of Jesus Christ as known by Christians. Satan will make himself look like Christ through Antichrist, and his demons to look like God’s angels (2 Corinthians 11:14). In this way, Satan can deceive people into following and worshipping him and Antichrist (Revelation 13:4). This would be one of the greatest deceptions of all time!

Satan Deceives People to Believe That  Jesus Christ is Antichrist

If Satan is masquerading as Christ, and his demons as angels, what happens when the real Jesus Christ and His angels come on the scene? Satan has to somehow convince people that the real Jesus Christ is the bad guy. Apparently, he pulls this off and gathers multitudes to the Battle of Armageddon to fight God (Revelation 16:14)! Satan knows that he will lose, but he is willing to give it his best shot! Don’t be deceived and go along with him!

Antichrist Will Set Up the Abomination that Makes Desolate

In God’s time, Antichrist (having been empowered by Satan in Revelation 13:2) will reveal himself (2 Thessalonians 2:3,6) through deception and false signs and wonders from Satan (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10). Antichrist will declare himself to be God (2 Thessalonians 2:4).

Antichrist will take over the holy place (the Temple in Jerusalem), pollute the sanctuary, and stop the sacrifice and oblation (offering). He will set up the abomination of desolation spoken of by Jesus and Daniel (Matthew 24:15, Daniel 9:27, 11:31, 12:11, 8:11).

Those who follow Antichrist will receive the wrath of God (Revelation 14:9-11).

Antichrist and His Armies Will Surround Jerusalem

Luke 21:20 and Revelation 11:2 both refer to Jerusalem being trodden down by the Gentiles. Since Revelation 11:2 occurs during the second half of the 70th week of years, Luke 21:20 must also. Therefore, Jerusalem must be surrounded by armies at the midpoint of the 70th week of years.

The Second Half of the 70th Week of Years

Two main characteristics of the second half of the 70th week of years are great deception and great tribulation. Satan and his demons will have been cast out of Heaven to the earth in the middle of the 70th week of years. They will deceive people to wage a rebellion against God and His people that will culminate with the Battle of Armageddon.

Some of the main characters mentioned are Antichrist, the False Prophet, false christs and false prophets, and the two witnesses that God will empower to prophesy.

God’s Two Witnesses

And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. (Revelation 11:3-4)

The passage above does not clearly identify who the two witnesses are. However, the following verse was a promise given to the apostle John as he wrote the book of Revelation.

And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings. (Revelation 10:11)

Tradition states that John was exiled to Patmos by the Emperor Domitian around 95 AD and then returned to his home in Ephesus 18 months later. John was probably in his 90s at this point, and there is no Biblical or historical evidence that John prophesied “before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings” after he left Patmos. However, the two witnesses will do exactly that. Since this promise must be fulfilled, it is very possible that John is one of the two witnesses.

God made a similar promise to the prophet Daniel:

But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days. (Daniel 12:13)

The Hebrew word translated lot can also mean portion, or “thing assigned by casting lots”. So it appears that Daniel will rest and then stand to fulfill his assignment in the “end of the days”. It is possible that Daniel is the second witness.

The ministry of these two witnesses is described in Revelation 11:5-13.

Great Deception

The Nature of the Strong Delusion

For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2:7-12)

This is a sobering passage. The truth is that God offers eternal life to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ (John 3:16, 2 Peter 3:9). But because of man’s rejection of the only way of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, God will send a strong delusion. This will occur primarily through seducing spirits and doctrines of devils (1 Timothy 4:1), false Christs, and false prophets. In 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 the apostle Paul gives a similar description of the false apostles that he confronted in his day.

Demonic activity and deception will increase as the second coming of Jesus Christ approaches. One of the primary means of deception is through signs and wonders, and miracles (Matthew 24:24, 2 Thessalonians 2:9, Revelation 13:13-14, revelation 16:14). While this deception or delusion is directed at unbelievers as a consequence for their unbelief as stated above, believers can be drawn into it as well. This is why Jesus and the New Testament writers warn us so many times about deception. When describing the end times, the first words out of Jesus’ mouth are “see that no one deceives you”. If His disciples could not be deceived, He would not have warned them.

Keep in mind that there is no Scripture that indicates that signs and wonders, and miracles from God’s people will increase during this same period of time.

False Christs and False Prophets

Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. (Matthew 24:23-26)

During the beginning of sorrows, Jesus warned that many false christs would come in His name and deceive many. During the first half of the 70th week of years, Jesus said that false prophets would arise and deceive many.

Now, in the second half of the 70th week of years, Jesus again states that false christs and false prophets will arise. Also keep in mind that at the beginning of the second half of the 70th week of years, Satan and his angels have been cast out of heaven and into the earth. Thus there exists the potential for even more and stronger demonic activity during this time.

Deceive if Possible the Very Elect

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. (Matthew 24:24)

Jesus warns that these false christs and false prophets will show great signs and wonders, and deceive, if possible, the very elect. In addition to Jesus’ warnings, there are many other warnings in the Bible against deception. There would be no need for these warnings if followers of Jesus Christ could not be deceived.

The phrase “if it were possible” occurs a few other places in the New Testament. In Acts 20:16 Paul “hasted” to get to Jerusalem because it was possible for him to get there in time. Applying that to Matthew 24:24 also indicates that the “very elect” can be deceived.

Falling Away or Apostasy

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4)

Some translations translate “falling away” as “rebellion”. In this case, the rebellion would refer to Antichrist leading the world to rebel against God and His people, which would culminate with the armies of the nations being gathered together to fight Jesus Christ at the Battle of Armageddon.

But the phrase translated “falling away” is the Greek word apostasia, which can also be translated “forsake”. The only other place this Greek word occurs in the New Testament is in Acts 21:20-21. In this case, the text is talking about Jewish people forsaking (no longer following, or falling away) from the teaching of Moses. In the same way, 2Thessalonians 2:1-4 is referring to believers in Jesus Christ forsaking (no longer following, or falling away) from Jesus Christ. Since the antichrist will be revealed at the mid-point of the 70th week of years, the falling away or apostasy could start during the first half of that week.

The False Prophet

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed (Revelation 13:11-15).

The False Prophet has two horns like a lamb but he speaks like a dragon. He causes people to worship the first beast (Antichrist) and he has power to do great wonders and miracles for the purpose of deceiving people. He gives life to the image of beast and causes all who do not worship the beast to be killed.

Great Tribulation

The Nature of the Conflict Between the Saints and Satan

Two Signs in the Heavens

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. (Revelation 12:1-2)

And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. (Revelation 12:3-4)

The word that is translated wonder is the Greek word, semeion, which also means sign. Comparing Revelation 12:5 and Revelation 19:15 we can conclude that the child born of the woman is Jesus Christ. Jesus came forth from Israel, so the woman represents Israel. This results in great conflict between Israel and the followers of Jesus Christ and the Great Red Dragon or Satan who empowers Antichrist.

Remnant of Israel Preserved in Wilderness

And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. (Revelation 12:14)

In Exodus 19:1-4 God says that He delivered Israel from Egypt on “eagles’ wings”. In similar fashion, Revelation 12:6 and Zechariah 14:3-5 describe how God will provide a way of escape for His people from Jerusalem. We are not sure exactly where this is, but it sounds very much like the instructions Jesus gave to flee to the mountains in Luke 21:20-24.

The Great Tribulation for Israel and Followers of Jesus Christ

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. (Matthew 24:21)

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. (Daniel 12:1)

For thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. (Jeremiah 30:5-7)

Based on the passages above, the second half of the 70th week of years will see a time of great tribulation unlike any other in history for Israel. Followers of Jesus Christ will also be impacted since we have been grafted into the root of the olive tree that represents God (Romans 11:16-24). This great tribulation is a result of the conflict between the woman in heaven and the great red dragon.

When Jesus begins to destroy Antichrist’s kingdom from Heaven there will be great tribulation for the people of Antichrist’s kingdom. In that sense, great tribulation extends until Jesus returns (Matthew 24:29-30).

Antichrist Makes War with the Saints

Daniel 7:21, Revelation 12:17, and Revelation 13:7 mention Antichrist waging war on the saints in general terms.  The following Scriptures provide more details.

Jerusalem Trodden by Gentiles

jerusalemAnd they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled (Luke 21:24). This coincides with Revelation 11:1-2. Likewise, the prophet Ezekiel foretold of a great and mighty army that would come against Israel in the latter days. (Ezekiel 38:14-17). Zechariah 14:1-2  and Mich 4:11 also refers to Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, and the desolation that follows.

Destroys the Temple

And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. (Daniel 9:26)

God’s People Purged

Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. (Daniel 12:10)

Persecute Christians

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. (John 16:2)

This is another lie that the deceiving spirits are conditioning people to believe. The killing of God’s people will peak during the 70th week of years, but it has been intensifying over the last several decades. And, in the book of Revelation, when Antichrist kills the two witnesses of God, it says that the people will rejoice and buy gifts.

Disable the Church

In order for Satan to get people to follow him, he must eliminate or at least discredit Christianity, and the Bible (2 Peter 2:1-3). Otherwise, people will know the truth and not follow him. Satan’s goal is that as Christianity fades away, a new, one world religion will emerge that will accept anything except the God of the old and New Testaments.

The Mark of the Beast

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six (Revelation 13:16-18).

Antichrist will cause all to receive a mark on their right hand or in their forehead through which they can buy or sell, thus establishing a one world economy. He who has understanding will be able to count the number of the first beast which is 666.

In the End the Saints Are Victorious

In the following passages we see God describing a time of great trouble such as never was before for Israel. In both cases, God also promises deliverance.

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. (Daniel 12:1)

Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him: But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them. Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid. For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished. (Jeremiah 30:7-11)

We also see God’s perspective in these verses:

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. (Revelation 12:11)

And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. (Revelation 15:2)

The End of the 70th Week of Years

The 70th week of years will end when the Heavenly court passes judgment to consume and destroy Antichrist’s kingdom (Daniel 7:26). Two other indications are when Antichrist scatters the power of the holy people (Daniel 12:7), and Daniel 9:24 is fulfilled.
